Dr. Andrew Inkpen is a Senior Strategist for Navigate International and the J. Kenneth and Jeanette Seward Chair in Global Strategy at Thunderbird — The Garvin School of International Management in Glendale, Arizona. Dr. Inkpen holds a B. Comm. degree from St. Mary’s University, an MBA degree from the University of Western Ontario, and a Ph.D. in Business Policy and International Business from the University of Western Ontario. Prior to entering academe, Dr. Inkpen worked in public accounting and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Canada.

Before joining the faculty at Thunderbird, Dr. Inkpen was on the faculty of Temple University. He has also taught at the University of Western Ontario and the National University of Singapore. In 2002-2003 Dr. Inkpen was a visiting professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. Dr. Inkpen has taught a variety of courses, including Competitive Strategy, Global Strategy, and Corporate Strategy. Dr.Inkpen is actively involved in a variety of Executive Development Programs at Thunderbird and has taught extensively in Asia, Latin America, and Europe. He has been the academic director of the Thunderbird Mergers & Acquisitions program and the Global Telecommunications Management program. He has also taught on programs for various companies, including Ericsson, CEMEX, Teleflex, ExxonMobil, DENSO, Cisco, Mattel, Alcatel, Volvo Penta, Honeywell, and EADS.

Dr. Inkpen’s research and teaching interests focus on the management of multinational firms, with a particular focus on strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions, organizational learning, and global strategy. He is currently involved in several research projects. One project is examining how multinational firms transfer best practices within and across the organization. He is also studying various aspects of international joint venture and strategic alliance management. Much of his alliance research involves intensive case studies. He has recently studied NUMMI, a joint venture between Toyota and General motors, and Suzhou Industrial Park, a joint venture between the Singapore government and Suzhou municipality of China.

Articles by Dr. Inkpen have been published in various academic and practitioner publications including Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Executive, California Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Long Range Planning, Organizational Dynamics, Organization Science, Advances in International Comparative Management, and European Management Journal. He is the author of a book examining automotive supplier alliances titled The Management of International Joint Ventures: An Organizational Learning Approach (Routledge) and has a new book in press called Global Strategy: Value Creation And Advantage In The International Arena ( Oxford). He is actively involved in teaching case development and has written more than 30 cases. He is a co-author of the fifth edition of International Management: Text and Cases (Irwin/McGraw-Hill). He is on the editorial boards of seven journals, including the Strategic Management Journal (the leading academic journal in strategic management), Organization Science, Journal of Management, Journal of International Management, Management International Review, and Asia Pacific Journal of Management.
